GENERAL private
swim lessons FAQ

What ages do you teach?
We teach swimmers of all ages, from young children and toddlers to adults. Our instructors adjust each lesson based on the swimmer’s age, experience, comfort level, and individual goals.

Do you teach beginners?
Yes! Beginners are welcome and are one of our specialties. We work with swimmers who have little to no prior experience, including those who may be nervous or uncomfortable in the water.

Do you teach adults?
Yes! We offer private adult swim lessons for beginners, swimmers looking to build confidence, and those who want to improve their swimming technique.

What if my child is afraid of the water?
That’s completely okay. Many swimmers begin with fear or hesitation around the water. Our instructors focus on building trust and comfort first, then gradually introduce new skills at the swimmer’s pace. We never want a swimmer to feel rushed or pressured.

How do I know which program is right for my swimmer?
When you contact us, we’ll ask about your swimmer’s age, experience, goals, and preferred lesson format. Based on that information, we’ll recommend the lesson type and package that best fits your swimmer.

SCHEDULING

How do I request lessons?
Getting started is simple:
1. Contact us with your city, pool access, preferred days/times, swimmer information, and preferred package.
2. We review your request and match your swimmer with an appropriate instructor based on availability, age, experience, personality, and goals.
3. We send your invoice and contract to your email for completion.
4. Once everything is completed, we’ll confirm your lesson schedule and you’re all set!
Your instructor will meet you at your scheduled first lesson.

Can I choose my instructor?
You may request a specific instructor, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your preference based on availability. Otherwise, we’ll thoughtfully match your swimmer with an instructor based on their age, experience, personality, comfort level, and goals.

How do I know what times are available?
Our availability changes throughout the week based on instructor schedules and existing students. We currently teach primarily weekday afternoons/evenings and weekend mornings/afternoons.
When you inquire, send us your preferred days and times and we’ll check our current availability.

How far in advance should I request lessons?
We recommend reaching out as early as possible, especially during our busiest seasons. Our schedules can fill quickly, and requesting lessons in advance gives us the best opportunity to find a consistent time that works for your family.

CANCELLATIONS

What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or schedule changes.
Cancellations or no-shows made with less than 24 hours’ notice may result in the lesson being forfeited without a makeup or credit.
Please review our full Terms & Conditions for complete cancellation and scheduling policies.

Do you offer makeup lessons?
Yes, eligible makeup lessons may be scheduled according to our makeup policy and instructor availability. Makeup lessons must be scheduled within the timeframe outlined in your H20zone agreement.

What happens if we’re late?
Lessons begin and end at their scheduled time. If a swimmer arrives late, the lesson will still end at the originally scheduled time so we can stay on schedule for the families following your lesson.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN HOW TO SWIM?

How long does it usually take to learn how to swim?
Every swimmer is different. Progress depends on factors such as age, previous experience, comfort level, consistency, and individual learning pace.
Our 12-lesson package with 30-minute lessons is our most popular option and provides a consistent block of instruction for swimmers to build foundational skills and demonstrate meaningful progress.
However, there is no set number of lessons that guarantees a swimmer will become proficient. Our instructors evaluate progress throughout the program and help determine the next steps.

WHAT TIMES DO YOU HAVE AVAILABLE?

What times do you have available?
We primarily teach:
Weekdays: Afternoons & evenings
Weekends: Mornings & afternoons
Exact availability depends on instructor schedules and current student bookings. When you contact us, send us your preferred days and times and we’ll check what is currently available.

LESSONS

How long are lessons?
We offer 20-minute, 30-minute, and 45-minute lessons. Our most popular option is the 30-minute lesson, which works well for most swimmers.

Do you offer private lessons?
Yes! Our private 1:1 lessons provide individualized instruction with one swimmer and one instructor.

Do you offer semi-private lessons?
Yes! We offer 2:1 semi-private lessons for swimmers who are a good match in age and swimming ability. This is a popular option for siblings and friends.

Can siblings take lessons together?
Yes! Siblings can take semi-private lessons together as long as they have reasonably similar swimming abilities. If their skill levels are significantly different, we may recommend separate private lessons so each swimmer can progress appropriately.

Can friends take lessons together?
Yes! Friends can take semi-private lessons together as long as they are a good match in age, ability, and swimming experience.

PACKAGES

How do packages work?
H20zone currently offers lessons in packages rather than individual classes. Packages allow us to reserve your swimmer’s lesson dates in advance and provide a consistent schedule for continued progress through our curriculum.

Do you offer discounts?
Yes! Our larger packages offer a lower cost per lesson, so the more lessons you purchase, the more you save per session.

Do you offer single lessons?
We currently do not offer single lessons. Due to high demand, packages allow us to reserve lesson slots consistently for your swimmer and give them the opportunity to complete a structured course of lessons.
Rather than using individual lessons that may be difficult to schedule consistently, packages secure your dates in advance and support continuous progress.

Do you offer trial classes?
We currently do not offer trial classes and only offer packaged lessons. This allows us to reserve continued lesson availability after the initial class rather than having a swimmer take one lesson without having a consistent schedule afterward.
We understand that finding the right instructor is important. H20zone has multiple instructors, and if you feel a different coaching style would be a better fit for your swimmer, we can work with you to reassign your swimmer to another available coach.

When does my package begin?
Your package begins on your first scheduled lesson, not the date of purchase.

How long are packages valid?
Packages are valid according to the current package terms provided at registration. Please refer to your H20zone agreement for the specific expiration date and package terms.

Can I renew my package?
Yes! We recommend renewing before your current package is completed so we can help maintain your swimmer’s consistent schedule and avoid gaps in lessons.

SAFETY

Are your instructors trained/certified?
Our instructors are personally selected and trained according to H20zone’s teaching standards. We look for instructors who are qualified, responsible, patient, reliable, encouraging, and genuinely passionate about teaching.
We maintain consistent standards for safety, communication, instruction, and student progress across our team.

Do lessons include water safety?
Absolutely. Water safety is a core part of our curriculum.
Depending on the swimmer’s age and ability, lessons may incorporate skills such as floating, breath control, wall skills, climbing out, water orientation, treading water, swimming to safety, and developing appropriate awareness and respect for the water.

What happens if my child is uncomfortable in the water?
We meet swimmers where they are. If your child is nervous or uncomfortable, our instructor will focus on building trust and confidence before progressing to more challenging skills.
We don’t believe in forcing a swimmer through fear. Our goal is to create a positive environment where they can gradually become more comfortable and confident in the water.

LOCATIONS

What areas do you service?
We currently serve families in:
San Jose • Milpitas • Los Altos • Santa Clara • Mountain View • Sunnyvale • Cupertino • Campbell • Los Gatos • Saratoga • Daly City • Fremont • Union City • Newark • San Francisco
Our service area may vary based on instructor availability and location.

What if I don’t have my own pool?
We prefer clients with access to their own pool because it provides the most convenient and consistent experience for the swimmer.
However, if you don’t have access to a pool, we’re happy to offer options when available. H20zone currently has access to private residential pools in Daly City, San Jose, and Union City.
Pool availability is limited and must be confirmed when scheduling.
